The SCA attempts to recreate the life and times of people from before the 17th century CE (Common Era)...and there certainly was no lack of fighting and war in those times! In that spirit, combat is one of the cornerstones for the SCA recreation. There are several different types of combat arts.
Armored combat, also known as "hardsuit" fighting, recreates the battlefield experience in a war. Up to hundreds of fighters and knights, in armor, screaming towards each other...what a rush of adrenaline! This type of combat requires a suit of armor and weapons made of wrapped rattan or flexible plastic pipe - no live steel in SCA combat. Each Barony holds fighter practices on a regular basis. If you're interested, see the Links page for a list of the Barony websites, which will have dates and locations for the practices.
Rapier combat is a late-period combat similar to modern day fencing. The armor requirement is different for rapier fighters to accommodate the fighting style, but as in fencing it requires you to be lighter on your feet than in hardsuit combat. Rapier practices are typically held at the Baronial fighter practices; see the Links page.
Archery is the use of bows and arrows, both on the battlefield (Combat Archery) and on the range (Target Archery). As this is a medieval recreation, period style bows only (recurve bows, straight bows, long bows, and crossbows), please. Compound bows, sights, stabilizers and mechanical releases are purely modern and are therefore not permitted. Brymstonne does have a target archery group. At this time practices are held as schedules permit. Please check the calendar or contact Master Phil or Lady Selina if you are interested in joining us. Experience is not required nor is equipment. Brymstonne does have some loaner gear available for use at practices.
Finally, what would any recreation of combat be without the research, construction, and use of siege machines! Catapults, ballistae, trebuchets...heavy artillery the way it was meant to be!
